What is happening in the print industry?
You may be wondering why there is a supply problem for paper in the UK print industry. There are a few factors which are currently impacting on the supply of paper to UK printers. Some European suppliers have been redirecting some of their stock to China, where a number of small paper mills have been closed due to tighter environmental legislation. Not only that, but due to reduced capacity in North America, partly owing to a major conversion project, some of Europe’s supplies are also being diverted across the Atlantic. On top of this, as paper costs rise, publishers are opting for lower grade papers for book printing to save costs in publication printing.
Supply of paper has declined partly due to a fall in demand resulting in the demise of a couple of major paper mills in Norway and Germany. This has now put pressure on supply in Europe with some paper manufacturers sold out until the end of the year as supplies are already allocated to regular customers.
Experts in print – Mustang can advise you…
“We shouldn’t panic about print”, clarifies Mustang Director, Mark Edwardson, who has had 20 years working in or alongside the print industry, “this has happened before in 2001 and before that in 1995/96. Our clients are usually unaware of any such issues as printers plan ahead to avoid unavailability. Those who are potentially at risk are clients who try and complete last minute print jobs, as the paper they may need could be already allocated to other jobs” Mark advises to start talking to Mustang about any potential print jobs for the rest of the year much earlier than you would normally. “Lead times for some grades of paper could be weeks or even longer but if we can get the job booked in early then we have a better chance of meeting deadlines”.
